The board wired up and labelled. Keeping the wiring bundled means later changes can be made without taking it apart.

EV charging point

A charger on the garage wall with its own supply. A charging point always needs a dedicated circuit and residual current protection. Here the cable run happened to be unusually easy, but the customer was worried about whether the main fuses were big enough. Instead of upgrading to a larger service connection, we measured the actual consumption over a few days and found the existing main fuses were sufficient — not even load management was needed.

Replacing the board

Old circuits are moved over to the new board one at a time. That is also when it becomes clear which existing runs can be kept.

Cabling before the ceiling closes

While the ceiling is open, even bigger lighting changes are easy to make. Modern lighting usually comes from several separate light sources, and fitting those in afterwards is considerably more awkward. In this job we got to do it the easy way.

Runs to the board

Every circuit in the house is brought to the board recess before termination. A tidy bundle now means a clear board later. The sheer number of cables can look alarming, but this is how you make sure there is enough capacity for plenty of sockets, and that one fuse tripping does not take other equipment down with it.

Wiring the upper floor

Runs are made while the structure is still open — no need to come back into the attic once the insulation is in. It is not worth burying high-power recessed LED fittings in the insulation wool, though: they fail before long if air cannot circulate around them.

RCD protection and labelling

A residual current device and clearly labelled circuits. Labelling the cables is a fairly small effort, but it helps enormously the next time the wiring has to be changed.

Kitchen renovation and lighting control

In few 1970s flats does the kitchen look this good. Here the wall between the kitchen and the living room was taken down and an island kitchen put in its place. The living room lighting is controlled through a wireless relay, so the switch that used to be on that wall could be replaced with one on the kitchen wall — without having to redo the cabling from scratch.
